Unlike traditional cable internet, which uses electricity to send its signals, fiber optic sends signals through light that travels down tiny strands of glass enclosed within the cable, making it impervious to electrical interference. This method of delivery allows the signals to travel faster and requires less intermediate equipment. Like many other modern utilities, fiber optic internet is typically buried underground, protecting it from weather, wind, and downed power lines, and allowing for greater reliability.
